“PRAYER IS NOT AN OPTION—-IN OPERATION FREEDOM” By Pastor Cyndi Higgins
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly as I should. We always thank God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all of God’s people—the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you (through Brother Epaphras). In the same way the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. For this reason, since the day we heard about you (through Brother Epaphras), we have not stopped praying for you” (Colossian Believers) We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. (Brother) Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured. I vouch for him that he is working hard for you and for those at Laodicea and Hierapolis.” Colossians 4:2-4; Colossians 1:3-12; Colossians 4:12-13
Epaphras: A convert from paganism and an awesome Evangelist. A native of Colossae which by the time of Paul and Brother Epaphras it had become a second rate market town, however hundreds of years before it had been a leading city in Asia Minor (present day Turkey). During Paul’s three year ministry in Ephesus, Brother Epaphras had been converted from paganism to Christianity and he had carried the gospel to Colossae (Colossians 1:7). He was more than likely the one who planted the Church in Colossae and evangelized into the nearby cities of Laodicea and Hierapolis. Apostle Paul loved him and admired him, calling him a ‘fellow prisoner’ in Philemon 23. He called him his dear fellow servant and a faithful minister of Christ.
Epaphras was the one who told Paul while in Rome about the Colossian Church problem which stimulated Paul to write this letter to the Colossian Church believers.
Paul acknowledged that these believers knew the Gospel Truth because of Epaphras and that Epaphras had told Paul about them. He had actually boasted about the believers in Colossae of their faith in Christ Jesus and of their love for all of God’s people. He had told Paul about their good and the good fruit the gospel being spread abroad was producing. Therefore, even though Paul had not planted the Church or met these believers himself, he knew through this faithful minister of Christ about their love in the Spirit.
As we gather together around the Lord’s table on our knees, let us thank our Lord for everything and be reminded that we are no body and we are nothing without Him. For the Bible says, we are hidden in God the Father through Jesus Christ. He says we move and we exist in His being. Yes, my darlings—who are we but as Paul stated, “I am a prisoner of and for Christ Jesus.”
We are in an intense, spiritual war with the forces of darkness. Demons are just as real in our day as in Jesus’ day and still desire to inhabit people. But Christians have powerful spiritual weapons with which to fight demonic possession. One of the most powerful is that precious, holy name which is above all others: Jesus! All believers have this weapon available to them: In my name they will drive out demons … (Mark 16:17). Is any among you sick? James 5:14-16: 14 “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
